Shikaku: what to know before playing

Choose a round of Shikaku and settle into its rules. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

Something to practise

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you are aiming for

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.

Try this example

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

An important reminder

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. Check the rule before repeating the action. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
